We have a 'used once' external frame backpack from Gregory. This is the Gregory Evolution pack, voted the best in 1995 - been stored in a dry walk-in closet for a long while. Please consider photos part of the description. Please ask any questions prior to purchase.
I suspect anyone looking at this knows more about it than I do. It appears to be a Medium pack with Large Waist Strap and Shoulder Straps (see photos) - custom fit. There is no wear on any parts beyond the red plastic pole covers. Please note that the external frame support seems to be missing - if it's located, we'll update the listing.
Details:
7lbs 5oz. 3.31 kg.
430 ripstop nylon pack cloth.
Top loading access.
Twin vertical side pockets.
11" expandable spindrift collar.
Flo Form shoulder harness, padded trampoline, limbar pad, and tri-density waist belt.
Large zippered front pocket.
Extemely comfortable.
Stackability - stack plenty of gear on the top and lash it to the frame, which extends 7 inches above pack bag.
The Evolution is a great pack for those with bad backs.
This backpack uses both aluminum and plastic in the frame. The vertical sidepieces are aluminum, and the cross members are plastic. Gregory has also substituted the foam back padding with a unique plastic panel that covers the back. The plastic panel is covered with a compression molded closed cell ribbed foam pad. In some cases, this design might not be much cooler than an internal frame pack, but provides much greater comfort.
The plastic back panel contours to the body much better than simple foam pads. And the plastic cross members in the frame provide greater twisting flex while walking. Gregory has also chosen to put the permanent hip belt attachment at the back below the small of the back, an area that experiences minimum "motion" while walking. Additional stretch attachments on the side of the hip belt provide stability.
The polymer frame cross members allow the pack to flex slightly with your movements. The back pad area is well ventilated and cool, a good pack for the hot sticky summer. It has a couple side pockets which are great for getting at gear quickly. It also has a little frame shelf that lets you set the pack down so it stands upright (you don't have to bend over so much to unload stuff).
