Interested in the “perfect” homestead chicken? My pick is the heritage Cornish! Cornish are beautiful chickens and they come in several colors. I have White Laced Red, and Dark Cornish.
I currently have a very limited selection of newly hatched chicks to choose from - straight run $5.00 each. Also have a few 30 day old chicks ready to come off heat - $7 each
Developed in Cornwall England in 1820 as a game bird called the “Indian Game”, the name was changed to Cornish in the 1890’s. Recognized by the APA in 1893 but they are now on the Livestock Conservancy’s endangered breeds WATCH list. Cornish chickens size is deceptive. Their close feathers make them look lighter than they really are. They are like picking up a brick! Males weigh 10.5 lbs. and females weigh 8 lbs. The heritage Cornish has a very broad meaty breast and is one of the main chicken breeds responsible for the meat chickens we raise today. So extra roosters or old hens are quite valuable supper companions. They are also calm, friendly, good layers of plenty of nice brown eggs and excellent protective broody hens.
But what sets Cornish apart for me is that they STAY ALIVE! We free range our birds during the day and predators seem to abound. We have fox, coyotes and lots of hawks to contend with. The Cornish are great foragers and stay alert and aware, which means safer. The Cornish has a pea comb and small wattles, so they don’t have any trouble with frost bite in our cold Missouri winters and yet they also do well in the extreme heat.
I have had chickens for over 50 years and the heritage Cornish is hands down my favorite.
