This handcrafted necklace features a buffalo-leather strap adorned with authentic antique Venetian Lewis and Clark–era glass trade beads, originally purchased from Missouri River Traders. It includes four smaller trade beads in black, yellow, white, and red, along with one larger black bead showcasing a distinctive swirling pattern.
• Necklace length: approx. 38" (fully extended)
• Large bead size: approx. 1.25" × 0.75"
• Small bead size: approx. 0.4" × 0.25"
According to the original label, “Lewis and Clark beads were made in Venice, Italy, in the early 1800s. The colored beads were made in the 1700s and traded throughout North America.” The label also notes the four sacred colors of the Lakota:
• Black – Spirit of the West; Symbol: the Thunderstorm
• Yellow – Spirit of the South; Growth; Symbol: the Sun
• White – Spirit of the North; Purity; Symbol: Snow
• Red – Spirit of the East; Wisdom; Symbol: the Rising Sun
